In life, perception seemingly wins. Few people practice balanced thought. We see a situation, gather visual data and perception is formed. But perception is flawed. It only captures a glimpse of reality.
Perception is primarily based on visual data. Whatever information the eye beholds, it forms an opinion. We see a couple holding hands, and we perceive a stable marriage. Without any supporting evidence, we already know that’s the picture of love we want to experience. We see a woman cuddling an infant and we perceive a mother and child bond. We see a person completing a costly transaction and think they have money. We see a person well-dressed and perceive an intellectual individual. Essentially, quick glances drive many of our thought processes before any evidence is presented.
Perception is just a fancy way of expressing assumptions. In society, we know visual data carries more weight for some people. We have grown lethargic in our efforts to process beyond the visual. This is why attire is emphasized during job interviews. The resume wasn’t so great, but that suit projects the vision of the company. In court, defendants hide behind church clothes to appeal to the jury’s visual perception. Perception rules on so many fronts.
For the purpose of intentional living, perception cannot rule our thought lives, behaviors or opportunities. We must learn to process the present with discernment, wisdom and truth.
You are a jewel...the sparkle this world needs... never forget!
